Although they are a minority of our cases, cases involving non-traditional relationships are unique and provide special challenges for those in law enforcement who may have had little to no exposure with those in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered communities. Such cases can pose a liability to our agencies if not handled properly.
United 4 Safety will be training the Cherokee Family Violence Task force on LGBTQQI appropriate language, the impact of dual arrests within the community, additional barriers faced by LGBTQQI survivors, and how to make our programs more culturally competent at our August 13, 2010 meeting. Training will be from 12:30-2:30. They will focus the first hour toward law enforcement response so that LE and anyone who needs to return to court can leave at the 1:30 break. The next 45 minutes to an hour will be focused toward victim advocates.
