February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month! You can find out more about this important issue at teendvmonth.org. This month, we hope you will join us for the meeting on Friday, February 10th. During this meeting, we will be crafting posters for Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Please bring any craft and art supplies you have handy for this great cause. Poster boards will be provided. The meeting will run from 12:00-1:30 and, as always, will be held on the 2nd floor of the Historic Courthouse in Canton.

We had a great meeting on 9/9/11. Those that attended dusted off their arts and crafts skills and put the final touches on our awareness activity for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. Task Force members will be asking local businesses to post a notice that they support ending domestic violence for the duration of October. These will be available for pickup the last week of September.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our next meeting on Friday 10/14/11. The meeting with feature a presentation by Amy Economopoulos of the Anna Crawford Children’s Center.

Meeting Reminder for 7/8/11

Task Force members,

We recognize that getting to meetings during the summer can be a bit of a challenge, but want to encourage our regular members to attend tomorrow’s meeting. There will be no speaker, but we will be holding a discussion on the recent tragic death of a local victim, Shannon Lawrence. Tommie DeGonzague, our Fatality Review Committee Chair, will be leading the discussion about the systems involvement in this particular case. While this case is not yet appropriate for a traditional fatality review, we feel strongly that there are valuable insights into how we all work that can come out of this terrible event, and hope to engage in a discussion, rather than a review, on the matter.

The meeting will take place on Friday 7/8/11 in the 2nd floor of this Historic Courthouse in Canton. Networking and (bring your own) lunch will begin at 12:00 and discussion will begin at 12:30. Guests are welcome to participate in the discussion. We look forward to seeing you!

The goal of the training is to educate local faith leaders on their role in domestic violence. The multi-media presentation will include discussion and Q&A. Today, the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Georgia Commission on Family Violence released the 2010 Georgia Domestic Violence Fatality Review Report. Task Force Chair Niki Lemeshka, Fatality Review Chair Tommie DeGonzague, and Events & Outreach Co-Chair Heather Carter attended the press conference at the Capitol where Attorney General Sam Olens, GCFV Chair Judge Peggy Walker, GCADV Executive Director Nicole Lesser, and Bibb & Houston County’s Fatality Review Chair Frank Mack spoke about the report’s findings.

The Fatality Review is a driving force behind the work of our Task Force; if you would like to be involved in future reviews, please contact Tommie DeGonzague at tommie@cfvc.org.

Task Force Members,

The time has come to again accept nominations for officers of the TF. Given developments within the last year, there have been some changes in duties and new positions have been developed. This year we will have two new committees, the Education and Training Committee and the Outreach Committee. The Education and Training Committee will educate the community about our Task Force and Intimate Partner Violence. They will also provide educational opportunities to TF members. This committee will have co-chairs. The Outreach Committee will coordinate TF outreach events and coordinate with other groups at which TF may be present as a resource. This committee will have co-chairs.

If you would like to nominate someone for a position, please reply to this email with the name and position for which you are nominating. We will be accepting nominations until Wednesday, January 12, 2011. We hope to have voting ballots sent out Thursday morning via email. Thanks!

Our butterfly project continues to make an impact! Handcrafted purple butterflies can be spotted around Cherokee County at buildings including the Historic Courthouse and Canton City Hall. The displays are accompanied by information about the Task Force and statistics about Intimate Partner Violence.
